Quadriceps Injuries

Have you ever felt a sudden pain in your muscle while playing any sport? One of the reasons for that immense pain could be quadriceps injuries.
National Collegiate Athletic Association states that athletes suffer from quadriceps injury once per 10,000 athlete-exposure (AEs), with the highest rate in women’s soccer. Besides, women are more likely to suffer from quadriceps injuries than men.
Fatigued muscles and vigorous warm routines make you more prone to such injuries. You might need to visit a physical therapist for physiotherapy or other forms of treatment.
What are Quadriceps Injuries?
A quadriceps are a group of muscles in front of your thigh that helps you perform various movements, e.g., kicking, jumping, and running. These injuries directly affect your quadriceps muscles and usually happen during vigorous activities like soccer or sprinting.
The quadriceps injury range between grade I to grade III depending upon the severity of the muscle damage.
- Grade I strains are generally mild and cause low levels of pain. You can easily cure them with enough rest or physiotherapy exercises.
- Grade II strains are relatively more severe, with more breakage of your muscle fibers. And these strains require you to get physical therapy from trained physiotherapists to get better.
- Grade III strains are the most severe ones. You face severely torn muscle fibers causing intense pain and, sometimes, permanent loss of muscle strength.
Causes and Symptoms of Quadriceps Injuries
Quadriceps injuries can occur due to several reasons. Here, we discuss a few of the common causes:
Sports Injury:
Due to fast and vigorous movements, while running or kicking, your muscles get stretched beyond the breaking point, causing muscle strain or even tearing up.
Muscle Rupture:
You can also receive quadriceps injury if your thigh slams into an object or gets hit severely, tearing the fibers of your muscles.
You might experience sharp pain and a pop or dent in the muscle, indicating quadriceps injury. However, symptoms intensify after a few hours. You might soon start noticing:
- Swollen leg with black/blue marks
- Excruciating pain upon touching or moving
